July Legislative Update

Several new laws that I worked to pass this year will go into effect today. I wanted to take a moment to let you know about them.

State Investments in Shelby County

This year, I worked with my colleagues to secure funding for several specific projects in our state budget. Today marks the beginning of a new fiscal year, so these funds can be released for their designated uses. State investments in Shelby County include:

  • $21 million tax incentive toward FedEx's hub expansion at the airport
  • $10 million to make Tom Lee Park an even better place to enjoy the river
  • $2.5 million to build an outdoor amphitheater at Germantown Performing Arts Center to make artistic performances accessible to more children and families

Sports Betting

After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a Congressional ban on sports betting last summer, I received overwhelmingly positive feedback supporting legalization of sports betting in Tennessee. Memphis has been suffering for years because of the drain on its revenue going an hour down the road to the casinos in Tunica, Mississippi. This year, I voted in favor of legalizing sports betting on mobile apps on your phone. Beginning today, the process of rule making and appointments for a governing Advisory Council will begin. This new law will keep an estimated $50 million in revenue in our state!

Gym Tax Abolished

This spring, I received hundreds of emails and phone calls from my constituents urging me to eliminate Tennessee’s so-called “amusement tax” on small gyms, fitness centers, and health clubs. I was happy to co-sponsor legislation to abolish this ridiculous tax. Starting today, small business owners in our community no longer have to pay the gym tax.

It is an honor to represent you in the state Senate. If I may be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at 615-741-3036.
